• What is Infection Prevention?

  Infection prevention and control are a recommended series of steps that Healthcare facilities, Medical Practices and Hospitals implement to prevent the spread of all kinds of infectious diseases. These measures include but are not limited to isolation gowns, gloves, masks, hair nets, shoe covers, hand hygiene, eye protection and alcohol wipes.

• What is the difference between surgical and examination gloves?

  There are two main types of medical gloves: examination and surgical. Surgical gloves have more precise sizing with a better precision and sensitivity and are made to a higher standard, typically they are used in surgical settings in healthcare. 

  Examination gloves are available as either sterile or non-sterile, while surgical gloves are generally sterile, typically these are used in medical settings where surgery is not required.

• What gloves are used in surgery?

  There are a wide range of gloves used in surgical settings, these include Latex, Non-Latex, Nitrile, and sometimes other materials such as Oats.

  Natural rubber latex has been the material of choice for disposable surgical gloves. While latex offers a high level of performance, comfort, and flexibility, it is highly recommended that Nitrile gloves are used as these produce less skin irritations to latex.

   

  
• What gloves are used in a hospital?

  There are two different types of medical gloves in used in a hospital: latex and nitrile.

  Latex is made from rubber, a natural material. Latex is most often used in medical procedures. However Nitrile is the recommended type to use as it is better for the skin resulting in less skin irritations.

• What are nitrile examination gloves?

  Nitrile gloves are the best type of gloves for surgical and medical procedures. They produce less skin irritations and are of better quality.

  Nitrile gloves are made of a synthetic rubber that resembles latex, yet will have a better resistance to punctures.

• What are the different levels of Masks in Australia?

  In Australia AS 4381:2015 is the new standard for masks which are now rated into three levels of protection: Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 and N95

  Masks are required to meet minimum fluid resistance: 80, 120 and 160mm Hg

   

• When are surgical isolation gowns used?

  Surgical isolation gowns are used when there is a medium to high risk of contamination and a need for larger critical zones than traditional surgical gowns.
