Lignocaine is the name given to the drug lidocaine hydrochloride monohydrate.

Lignocaine is a clear, colourless, sterile, isotonic, preservative-free solution, administered via injection. This drug is classified as a local anaesthetic and antiarrhythmic drug.

Lignocaine can sometimes be administered to regulate an irregular heart rate but generally it is used to numb a small area on the body prior to relatively minor surgeries.  Local anaesthesia has made it possible for surgery to be performed safely and painlessly while the patient is awake by numbing the area around which it is administered. Unlike general anaesthetic, local anaesthetic offers fewer side effects and a shorter recovery period.
