What is a Pulse Oximeter

What is a Pulse Oximeter

A pulse oximeter is an important medical device used by healthcare professionals to measure the oxygen saturation in a patient’s blood. Monitoring levels of oxygen in a patient’s blood is a standard part of patient care and can be an important indicator if the oxygen levels in the blood drop. A drop in oxygen saturation can be often mean there is a serious issue with the circulatory or respiratory system.

Pulse Oximeters are small clip-on devices that usually attach to a patients fingertip. They are non-invasive and painless which measure the saturation of oxygen in a patient’s blood. They are generally used to give a doctor early warning signs that potential oxygen saturation levels are low and to monitor their patients more closely.

Once the pulse oximeter has been attached to the patient’s fingertip, they send two wavelengths of light into the finger, one to check the pulse rate and the other to check oxygen saturation. The whole process is quick and painless and is complete within seconds. The results are then displayed on the monitor of the device.

What does a Pulse Oximeter measure?

A Pulse Oximeter is used to take two measurements: oxygen saturation and pulse rate

The blood oxygen saturation is also referred to as SpO2. A SpO2 reading above 95% is considered normal.

A SpO2 reading below 92% is an indicator that there is not enough oxygen in the blood. If you have low blood levels it can lead to serious health issues including chest pain, shortness of breath and an increased heart rate.

Which Pulse Oximeter Should I Buy?

Vital Medical Supplies has a large range of Pulse Oximeters for sale online. We highlight below a few of our best selling devices. The devices have a display screen integrated into the body of the device are more affordable than those with separate clips and displays.

The inhealth™ Finger Pulse Oximeter measures the proportion of oxygenated haemoglobin in the blood in pulsating vessels, especially the capillaries of the finger or ear.

A portable finger pulse oximeter is ideal to use in situations where rapid oxygen saturation reading may be required.

Oximeters featuring a pulse detection and oxygen saturation are often referred to as SpO2 meters.
